Sample Itinerary
The cruise director/dive master on Seahorse is one of the very lucky few who
made the first real exploratory trip round this amazing new dive destination. No
need for worrying about if sites will be good, we have more than enough
absolutely incredible dive sites to keep divers excited every day. It’s so hot
we are not giving out all our area names just yet! Read on…
- Arriving from Manado we board Seahorse, boat orientation and safety briefings. We have time for a check dive on a great black sand critter site nearby, here we can also make a great night dive on the same site.
- Heading out towards the open ocean we dive a underwater sea mount, here we have a chance of grey reef and other sharks, lots of fusiliers, surgeons and dramatic scenery round the giant rocks that form this site. We head towards the Goraichi islands where we make a few dives on one great dive site, here we have it all, a coral covered wall where all the big pelagics cruise by off reef, colourful coral packed sloping gardens with black tip sharks mooching round, well worth a few dives! During our last trip we never managed to make a night dives in this region, I will go in search and find the best possible spot for us to go in search of nocturnal critters.
- Now into the Patinti Straits, first off we have to report in to the local village, this gives anyone interested a chance to go on land to say hello to the locals. These islands are very rarely visited and tourists are welcomed into this region. After we report in, we dive on the west side of an island for the big fish, here we have a great chance to see a few reef sharks, big Napoleon wrasse and lots of great schooling fish life. Depending on the current we will dive the north of the island for the reef scenery and best schooling fish action. We have a great drift through a channel, starting on a great coral ridge, slowly heading shallower and drifting up along the sandy slope where lots of big fish hang out, finally coming out to back eddy which stops us in a great area for critter hunting. Also a great place for our night dive! We can spend quite a few days in these straits, now we head into the current prone straits near Halmahera, here we have to be sure currents are safe before dropping in! A great chance here for biggies and outstanding pelagic fish action, when currents are performing right. We make two dives before moving to the mainland of Halmahera to see all tropical birds like parakeets, lorikeets and if usually hornbills, here it is possible to go on shore with the locals for a closer look at the bird life. We have a great anchorage with an excellent muck site in front of a small village, hear we can find all the usual classic black sand critters and get plenty of fresh coconuts to make the evenings cocktails with, be it alcoholic or none alcoholic, they taste oh so tropical!
- On each trip we like to excite divers with a day of exploring. Depending on previous trips we can chose from the southern area of Bacan, said to have great areas where mangroves meet deep open ocean reefs, said to have great marine life. Or, we can explore the islands to the far south of Halmahera?
- Heading north again we are back in the Goraichi island group for more great fish packed reefs and a we will dive on the most pristine hard coral garden which surrounds a whole island, for this evening we can sacrifice a night dive to make a beach BBQ in this area. We can spend lots of time within this great area of the Goraichi islands, to dive on more pristine reefs with excellent fish life and reef scenery, one of our dives here we will wait for a lull in the current so we can go in search of critters on the reef slopes. In the evening we can make a night dive for critters.
- Our final day of diving within the bay of Halmahera, here we can choose from fishy reef dives or critters for the last dive.
- Depart from Ternate to Manado
